Luke Scott - 1B, OF (Baltimore Orioles)

Luke Scott had been hitting .274 with 12 home runs and 30 RBI's before landing on the 15-day disabled list with a strained hamstring on the first of July. Not spectacular numbers, but consistent production that would benefit most teams especially with his eligibility in both the outfield and at first base. Even with his pre All-Star break numbers he was a player who really didn't get much respect in fantasy leagues. However, since returning to action on July 19, the word consistent has become an understatement. He singled in his first game back in a series against the Rays, and then erupted in a surge of power and clutch RBI plays, blasting two home runs in his second game back and another in the third. In less than a week since his DL stint ended, he has gone 11 for 24 (.458) with four home runs and eight RBI's. Since anyone who watches baseball knows that runs don't come easy for the Orioles, that's rather impressive. He has yet to have a hitless game since his return. It is unreasonable to believe Scott will remain this hot throughout the entire second half of the season, but his level of production before this hot streak wasn't too shabby at all. Scott is currently sitting on a .291 batting average, with 16 dingers, 38 RBI's and 40 runs scored. He is only 23 percent owned in Yahoo fantasy leagues and will be a great outfield helper off the bench or for any leagues that start a corner infielder. Scott has also been placed on the trading block by the Orioles, and word has it the Rangers are looking at him to replace the struggling Chris Davis. If that scenario turns out to be reality, Scott could do some serious damage in that hitters park.

Fausto Carmona - SP (Cleveland Indians)

The Indians are another team that lack the offensive fortitude to score a lot of runs as they are currently in a close three way battle for the worst record in the American League this season. As a result the average ownership of the five current starters of the Tribe's rotation falls in to the single digits at 9.5 percent. However, through the darkness there is a light and his name is Fausto Carmona. The 2010 All-Star Carmona has been superb this season while battling against an inept defense behind him and a line up that is hitting for a combined .248. He does walk a few too many batters and doesn't offer much in the strikeout department, but he has still managed to net 10 wins and is tied for third in the MLB with 15/20 quality starts. Carmona is still far from a must own pitcher as his K/9 ratio can sting a bit in shallower leagues, but he is winning games and maintaining a respectable ERA and WHIP. Carmona is more valuable in leagues that actually use quality starts as a scoring category, but he should still be owned in leagues of 12 or more teams and definitely in more than 31 percent of them.
